On Monday, Sept. 14 the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana opened the Orleans Parish Jail in New Orleans and began the transfer of more than 1,100 inmates into the facility. The new jail was a $150 million project that was largely funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to media reports. It replaces facilities that were damaged or rendered obsolete after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city and surrounding areas in 2005.
